Getting started
Frequently asked questions
welcome to our faq page
Navigating the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is easier when you have the right information. Let our FAQ page guide you through everything you need to know about Gracie Barra Fulshear.
Do I need to get in shape before I start Jiu-jitsu?
The best way to get in good physical shape for jiu-jitsu is by….training jiu-jitsu! The Gracie Barra class warm up includes several general calisthenics for the purpose of strength and endurance in addition to warming up our muscles and joints. Our curriculum is designed to help your body slowly adapt to jiu-jitsu.
Am I too old to start jiu-jitsu?
You’re never too old to start jiu-jitsu. We have students in their 40’s and well into their 50’s who train regularly. Also, since there are no strikes like other martial arts but instead relies on balance, leverage, and technique, it’s considered a good sport for us older folks to practice. The beauty of this art is its adaptability to the practitioner. Visit our adult class, you will see that our family oriented setting provides the right environment for safe training.
What do I wear to my first class?
Comfortable athletic clothes that will allow your body to move freely. A t-shirt, compression shirt, tights or board shorts are great examples. Wearing sandals or flip-flops are convenient to wear since you cannot have footwear on the mat and can’t be bare feet off the mat. Don’t forget to bring a water bottle!
Do I need a gi/kimono
for my first class?
We provide a loaner gi for your trial class. Coming to your trial class at least 10 minutes early allows you (or your child) have ample time to get fitted for the right size.
